Exceptional!
18 /20
for our Riesling Grand Cru Clos Schild 2005
"Streamlined, crystalline and precise"
Domaine Lucien Albrecht
Alsace
The heir to a long dynasty, Jean Albrecht manages one of the
largest estates in Alsace, covering around thirty hectares. Meticulous
working of the vines according to Ecocert certified organic agriculture
and hand-picked harvest. The estate is the largest Pfingstberg
grand cru and includes the Clos Schild. It regularly produces
well-balanced wines with crisp, frank aromas and an attractive
value-for-money price. Piniot Blanc, Auxerrois and Riesling Réserve
are undeniable safe bets and a delight to drink, full of fruit.
The wines:
the Auxerrois Balthazar is ripe and unheavy. The series of Rieslings
is uniform: the Cuvée Henri is full and easy to drink with
tasty fruit. The Pfingstberg grand cru is powerful without losing
its chiselled and salty side, it offers magical length. The positive
development of the 2005 vintage offers a streamlined, crystalline
and precise Clos Schild that still has great days in front of
it. The 2007 Pinot Gris, an expert vintage, has all the power
of the grapes. The Pfingstberg grand cru shows itself to be more
straightforward: the style is firm without any excess softness.
The Clos des Récollets is slightly calmer, but decanting
would give it another dimension and the wine offers up aromas
of white truffle whilst the palate extends with harmony. The red
Cuvée Weid expresses great grape ripeness and its substance
is sound, but with less wood which would give it more freshness.
